The Greedy Bird
The Greedy Bird (Ghana): Highlights the consequences of greed and the virtue of generosity.
Once upon a time, in a lush forest in Ghana, there lived a greedy bird named Kofi. Kofi was known throughout the forest for his insatiable appetite and his selfishness. He would hoard all the seeds and nuts he could find, refusing to share with any of the other birds.
One day, Kofi was flying high in the sky when he spotted a tree filled with ripe, juicy fruits. His mouth watered at the sight, and he swooped down to feast on the delicious fruits. However, as he began to eat, he noticed that the tree was surrounded by other birds who were also eyeing the fruits hungrily.
Kofi’s greedy nature took over, and he decided to eat as much as he could before any of the other birds could get to the fruits. He gobbled up fruit after fruit, not caring that the other birds were watching him with disappointment.
But as Kofi continued to eat, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his throat. He had eaten so much fruit that he couldn’t swallow any more. Panicking, he tried to fly away, but he was too heavy to lift off the ground. The other birds looked on in horror as Kofi struggled to breathe, regretting his greed.
Just then, a kind-hearted bird named Ama flew over to Kofi. She could see that he was in trouble, and without hesitation, she began to peck at his throat, dislodging the fruit that was stuck. Kofi was grateful for Ama’s help, and he realized the error of his ways. From that day on, he made a promise to himself to be more generous and to share his food with the other birds.
The other birds were happy to see Kofi change his ways, and they welcomed him back into their community. Kofi learned that greed only leads to trouble, and that generosity and kindness are much more rewarding in the end. And so, the greedy bird became known as the generous bird, and he lived happily ever after.
