The Tortoise and the Fishes.
The Tortoise and the Fishes (Nigeria): Highlights the consequences of arrogance and the importance of humility.
Once upon a time, in a small village in Nigeria, there was a tortoise who was known for his arrogance. He believed he was smarter and more powerful than any other animal in the village. One day, while walking by a river, he saw a school of fishes swimming in the water. He called out to them, “Hey, you foolish fishes! Why do you waste your time swimming around in circles? Come out of the water and let me show you how to live a better life.”
The fishes were amazed at the tortoise’s audacity. They knew that he couldn’t survive outside of the water, but they decided to play along with him. “Okay, Mr. Tortoise, we will come out of the water and learn from you,” they replied.
The tortoise was overjoyed and started to give them lessons on how to live on land. He taught them how to walk on their fins and how to breathe air. The fishes were struggling to keep up with the tortoise’s teachings, but they didn’t want to disappoint him.
After a few days of training, the tortoise decided to take the fishes on a walk around the village to show off their new skills. As they were walking, a group of children saw them and started to laugh. “Look at those silly fishes trying to walk on land!” they shouted.
The tortoise was embarrassed and angry at the children’s laughter. He decided to prove them wrong by taking the fishes to the king’s palace and showing off their new skills. However, as they were walking, the sun started to beat down on them, and the fishes started to dry out. They were gasping for air and struggling to breathe.
The tortoise realized his mistake and quickly ran back to the river with the fishes in tow. He put them back in the water, and they swam away, grateful to be back in their natural habitat.
From that day on, the tortoise learned the importance of humility and never again tried to act superior to others. The fishes also learned to trust their instincts and not to follow someone blindly without considering the consequences.
